Ulleungdo - Ulleungdo

An isolated island in the sea east of Gangwon-do, Korea. It has an area of ​​72.56 square kilometers and a population of 10,146 (2000). It is a volcanic island made of trachyte and andesite that erupted at the end of the Tertiary Period of the Cenozoic Era. There is a two-tiered caldera in the central north, with the lower tier being the Nari Basin, which is the only plain on the main island. The highest peak, Seongin-bong (984 meters), is the outer rim of the mountain, and the coast has cliffs due to sea erosion. In ancient times, the main island was an independent tribal nation called Usan, but later belonged to Silla. Since 1914, it has been under the jurisdiction of North Gyeongsang Province, and currently it forms Ulleung County, including the neighboring islands. It is one of the rainiest areas on the Korean peninsula, with an annual rainfall of 1,485 mm, but snowfall is particularly heavy in winter, and people prepare for this by building houses in a special style called udaegi. Dodong is the county seat, and there is a regular ferry service between Dodong and Pohang.

韓国（大韓民国）、江原道(こうげんどう／カンウォンド)東方の海上にある孤島。面積72.56平方キロメートル、人口1万0146（2000）。新生代第三紀末に噴出した粗面岩と安山岩からなる火山島で、中央北部に上下2段のカルデラがあり、下段が羅里盆地で本島唯一の平野である。最高峰の聖人峰（984メートル）は外輪山にあたり、海岸は海食のため断崖(だんがい)をなしている。本島は古代には于山(うざん)国という独立した部族国家であったが、のちに新羅(しらぎ)に帰属した。1914年以後、慶尚北道(けいしょうほくどう／キョンサンプクド)の管轄するところとなり、現在は近隣の諸島を含め、鬱陵郡を形成している。朝鮮半島の最多雨地の一つで、年降水量は1485ミリメートルであるが、とくに冬の降雪量が多く、ウデギという特殊な家屋構造でこれに備えている。道洞(どうどう)は郡庁所在地で、浦項(ほこう／ポハン)との間に定期船が運航している。
