...The prefectural capital of Yamagata Prefecture, located in the central eastern part of the prefecture, is also the largest commercial and industrial city in the prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. Its population was 254,488 (1995). It is located in the southern part of the Yamagata Basin, bordering Kaminoyama City to the south and Tendo City to the north. The eastern part of the city is the Ou Mountains, including the peak of Mt. Zao, and the mountainous region of Shirataka Hills to the west. The Tachiya River and Mamigasaki River, which flow west from the Ou Mountains, form alluvial fans in the eastern half of the basin and flow into the Sugawa River, which flows north through the central plain. The climate is inland and there is a large temperature difference, but the amount of snowfall is relatively low, with an average of 20 to 30 cm per year, which is relatively low in the plains of the prefecture.
