A story from the mid-Heian period. The most widely-acclaimed author is Minamoto no Shitago. It has 20 volumes. It is believed to have been written around the 970s. The story is intertwined with stories of musical miracles involving the sacred koto, which was passed down through four generations of lords: Kiyohara no Toshikage, his daughter, Fujiwara no Nakatada, and Inumiya, and a story about Minamoto no Masayori's daughter, Atemiya. While the story of the koto is legendary, Atemiya's story is notable for its realistic portrayal of various suitors and the political struggle in the chapter "Kuniyori". There are some inconsistencies in the individual characters and chronology, and the order of the volumes is not fixed by the text, resulting in some unresolved confusion, making it a work that cannot be considered complete. This is said to be the result of a compilation and stitching together of short stories written separately to create a long story. However, some people consider it to be more highly regarded than The Tale of Genji, as the first long Japanese story that incorporates sharp criticism of reality.
