A village in Nyu District, northwest of Fukui Prefecture. Population 2008 (1995). It is an agricultural and fishing village facing the Sea of Japan, with most of the village area being mountainous, part of the Nyu Mountains. It was established in 1952 by merging the fishing-based village of Koshino and the agricultural-based village of Shimosaki. Fishing is centered around Gamo and Gumizaki Bay, and sea urchins and Echizen crabs are local specialties. The coastal area from Igura in the south to Echizen Town to the south is one of Japan's three major daffodil producing areas, and Echizen daffodils are shipped to the Chukyo and Kansai regions.
