The people of Kandy call the city Mahanuwara (Great City). The Dalada Maligāwa Temple (Temple of the Tooth Relic), which houses the tooth of the Buddha, a symbol of royal succession, and the Perahera Festival (held every July or August), in which the tooth is carried on an elephant and paraded through the streets, are famous and attract many tourists. There are also important cultural facilities such as the two most powerful temples on the island, Malwatta and Asgiriya, the University of Peradeniya, the Tropical Botanical Gardens, and the Central Agricultural Research Institute.
