...Population: 23,605 (1995). Located on the west bank of the Shinano River in the central Echigo Plain, the town of Ono is an old riverside town at the confluence with the Nakanokuchi River. Since the mid-modern period, the town has had a thriving market and developed as a distribution center for agricultural products from the surrounding areas. It was once a low-lying marshland with many lagoons and a region prone to flooding, but at the end of the modern period, the Shinkawa drainage channel was excavated, and in 1922 the Okawazu Diversion Channel was completed upstream, which led to the development of dry rice paddies and made the area the core grain-producing region of the Echigo Plain. ...
