…capital of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Population 6.85 million (1994). In Arabic, it is called al-Qāhira, meaning "the victorious one." It was also called Miṣr al-Qāhira or simply Miṣr. Miṣr also means "military city" or "Egypt."
[Location and scenery]
It is located at the pivotal point where the long, narrow Nile River valley fanns out into the delta, and before modern times it was transported by water through the Nile, but from the mid-19th century onwards it was connected to the rest of the country by rail and road networks, and it has always been the political, economic and cultural centre of Egypt.
