Japanese: 連想 - れんそう（英語表記）association

Also called the association of ideas. It refers to the mental fact that there is a connection between ideas, one of which is elicited from the other, such as when the idea of "mountain" brings to mind the idea of "river." The British associative school emphasized association, and J. Locke is said to have been the first to use the term. According to D. Hume, the basic form of association is based on similarity, spatial-temporal proximity, and causal relationships. When a word is presented in an association test and other ideas freely arise in response, it is called free association, and when a specific response is required, such as by having the subject respond with an antonym or by having the subject say another word with the same meaning, it is called restricted association. This type of association method is used to diagnose mental conditions.

観念連合ともいう。「山」という観念から「川」という観念を思い浮べるように，諸観念間にある結合があり，一方から他方が引出されるという心的事実をいう。連想を重視したのはイギリス連想学派で，J.ロックが初めてこの語を用いたといわれている。連想の基本的形式は，D.ヒュームによれば類似性，時空的接近および因果関係によるとされている。連想テストである語を提示し，それに即応して他の観念が自由に心に浮ぶような場合を自由連想といい，特定の仕方で反応することを求める場合，たとえば反対語で答えさせるとか，同じ意味の他の語を言わせるとかする場合を制限連想という。このような連想法は精神状態を診断するのに用いられる。
