Utsunomiya [city] - Utsunomiya

Japanese: 宇都宮[市] - うつのみや
Utsunomiya [city] - Utsunomiya
A city in the center of Tochigi Prefecture. Established as a city in 1896. It is the prefectural capital. Most of the city is made up of alluvial plateaus and the alluvial lowlands of the Kinugawa and Tagawa river basins. The city center developed as a castle town for the Utsunomiya clan in the Middle Ages, and in the early modern period as a castle town for the Honda clan and other clans, a post town on the Nikko Kaido road, and a market town. The former samurai town of Uwamachi is now home to government offices, schools, and residential areas, while the town of Shitamachi is home to shops and financial institutions. The city is served by the Tohoku Shinkansen, Tohoku Main Line, Nikko Line, Tobu Utsunomiya Line, and Tohoku Expressway. Since the 1960s, the development of industrial parks in Utsunomiya and Kiyohara has progressed, and large companies have moved in, with electrical machinery, general machinery, food, and other industries being carried out. The city's manufacturing shipment value was 1.4798 trillion yen (2003), ranking first in the prefecture. The city is also known for its traditional wood-woven textiles, toys, and kanpyo crafts. Oya stone is mined in Oya, in the northwest, and the Oya rock-carved Buddha (special historic site) is famous. In the center of the city is Futarayama Shrine, which was once called Utsunomiya Daimyojin and is said to be the origin of the city's name. In March 2007, Kamikawachi Town and Kawachi Town in Kawachi County were incorporated into the city. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 416.85 km2 . 511,739 people (2010).
