1897‐1956 French physicist. Eldest daughter of Marc Curie and Pierre Curie. From the age of 10 to 12, she received education in physics, mathematics, chemistry, literature, history, and other subjects at a co-educational school where her mother, Marc Curie, Pierre Langevin, and J. Perrin were teachers. She then entered the University of Paris, and during World War I, she served as her mother's assistant as an X-ray rescue nurse. In 1918, she became an assistant at the Radium Institute of the University of Paris, which was headed by her mother, and in 1925, she obtained her doctorate for her research on the alpha rays of polonium. Due to his family's financial difficulties following the death of his father, he entered the École Supérieure de Physique et de Chemistry de Paris (1920), which offered a tuition exemption, where he met his teacher P. Langevin, who had a profound influence on his academic research and the formation of his worldview. He initially aspired to become an engineer, but following Langevin's advice, he became M. Curie's special laboratory assistant at the Radium Institute in 1925. The following year, M. Curie married P.
