Mitteis, Heinrich
Born: November 26, 1889 in Prague
Died: July 27, 1952. Munich. German legal historian. Professor of legal history, civil law, family law, etc. at the universities of Heidelberg (1924) and Munich (34). In 1935, he fled Nazi rule and moved to Vienna, and was exiled to Rostock after the unification of Germany and Austria. After World War II, he returned to the University of Berlin in 1946 and to the University of Munich in 1948 as professor. He is known for his research on comparative legal history that covers all of Europe, and also made great contributions to the combination of legal history with political history and intellectual history. His main works are Lehnrecht und Staatsgewalt (33), Der Staat des hohen Mittelalter (40), and Über das Naturrecht (48). His works Deutsche Rechtsgeschichte (49) and Deutsches Privatrecht (50) are also widely read textbooks.

ドイツの法制史家。ハイデルベルク (1924) ,ミュンヘン (34) 各大学の法制史,民法,家族法などの教授をつとめた。 1935年ナチス支配を逃れてウィーンに移り,ドイツ=オーストリア合邦後ロストックに追放されたが,第2次世界大戦後,46年ベルリン大学,48年ミュンヘン大学教授に復帰。全ヨーロッパを包括した比較法史の研究で知られ,また法制史と政治史,思想史との結合などに多大の業績をあげた。主著『封建法と国家権力』 Lehnrecht und Staatsgewalt (33) ,『中世盛期の国家』 Der Staat des hohen Mittelalter (40) ,『自然法論』 Über das Naturrecht (48) 。『ドイツ法制史』 Deutsche Rechtsgeschichte (49) ,『ドイツ私法史』 Deutsches Privatrecht (50) も教科書として広く読まれている。
