Ancient Japanese coins. Silver coins. This was the second time silver coins were issued after the Wadokaichin, and none were issued in ancient times after that. An imperial decree in March 760 (Tenpyo-hoji 4) ordered their issuance along with the Kaiki Shoho money coins and the Mannen Tsuho copper coins. At the time, the legal value was set at 1 Taihei Genho coin equivalent to 10 Mannen Tsuho coins, and 10 Taihei Genho coins equivalent to 1 Kaiki Shoho coin. There are no historical documents showing that either the Taihei Genho or the Kaiki Shoho coins were subsequently circulated, and they were not used as currency. The only two known to date are one that was traded between antique and old spring dealers in Kyoto and Osaka, and one that was discovered in the sutra repository of Toshodaiji Temple in 1928.
