This temple is of the Nanzen-ji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, located in Nishigamo, Kita-ku, Kyoto City. Its name is Kisshozan. It was founded in 1268 (Bun'ei 5) at Ichijo Imadegawa (near the northeast of the current Kyoto Imperial Palace) by Togan E'an, a disciple of the Chinese Zen monk Gotan Funei who came to Japan, and moved to its current location in 1282 (Kōan 5). It is well known throughout history that founder E'an took refuge at Iwashimizu Hachiman-gu Shrine to pray for the Mongol surrender during the Mongol invasions, and was rewarded by Emperor Kameyama with the title Shoden Gokoku-ji Temple. The temple also houses a petition for the surrender of the Mongol monks (Important Cultural Property) written by Togan Zen Master at the time.
