Corynebacterium

… [Motoyoshi Shigekazu]
[Bacterial plant diseases]
Since TJ Burrill discovered in 1878 that the pathogen of pear scald was a bacterium, numerous bacterial plant diseases have been discovered. Plant pathogenic bacteria belong to one of the following genus: Agrobacterium , Erwinia , Xanthomonas , Pseudomonas , or Corynebacterium. Most of them are rod-shaped bacteria measuring a few micrometers in length and just under 1 micrometer in diameter, and only Corynebacterium is gram-positive and non-flagellated. Pathogenic bacteria survive in soil, plant residues, and the root zone of weeds, becoming the primary source of infection and spreading through wind, rain, irrigation water, seeds and seedlings, and agricultural work such as pruning and pinching.
