Born: November 18, 1882 in Paris
[Died] April 28, 1973. Toulouse. French philosopher. One of the leading figures of Neo-Thomism, he developed his own theories across all areas of philosophy. He studied natural sciences and philosophy at the University of Paris, and later discovered Bergson and was enlightened to metaphysics. In 1904, he married the poet Raisa, and the two converted to Catholicism in 1906. From 1906 to 1908, he studied biology under Driesch in Heidelberg, and after returning to Paris, he criticized Bergson and became more interested in Thomistic philosophy. From 1914 to 1939, he was a professor of modern philosophy at the Catholic University of Paris. From 1933, he became a professor at the Institute of Medieval Studies in Toronto, Canada, and was a visiting professor at Princeton University in the United States from 1941 to 1942 and at Columbia University from 1941 to 1944. He was French ambassador to the Vatican from 1945 to 1948, and a professor of philosophy at Princeton University from 1948 to 1960. In 1958, the Jacques Maritain Center was established at the University of Notre Dame. His major works include La Philosophie bergsonienne (1913), Art et scolastique (20), Distinguer pour unir, o les degrés du savoir (32), and La Philosophie morale (60).
