...It is also a type of ritual implement used in esoteric Buddhism. It is a translation of the Sanskrit word vajra. The vajra is a mallet-shaped weapon with sharp blades on both ends of the handle, said to be modeled after thunder. It was originally owned by the thunder god Indra, but later in Buddhism it was believed that the god who carried this weapon (Vajra) always accompanied the Buddha like a shadow and protected him.
