...The surface of the land not covered by glaciers is polar tundra or bare earth, and is home to about 50 species of flowering plants, lemurs, wild reindeer on the southern islands, and numerous water birds that nest and hatch in summer. The islands were explored by the Russian explorer BAVil'kitskii (1885-1961), but in 1930-32 an expedition led by GAUshakov (1901-63) explored them in detail, named Severnaya Zemlya, and marked them on a map.
