[Modern Economics] D. Ricardo was the first to define the production period as the relative time that must elapse before the fruits of labor are brought to market, but it was E. von Boehm-Bawerk who placed this concept at the center of capital theory. He believed that indirect production always produces greater results than direct production, and considered indirect production to be synonymous with the lengthening of the production period and the deepening of capital. Boehm-Bawerk primarily considered the average production period as the average time between the input of some primary production factor into production and the consumption of its results, and this concept for society as a whole is considered to be the forerunner of the capital-production ratio concept that is commonly used today.
