East Anglia

A historical name for a region in the eastern part of England, Great Britain. Originally it referred to the territory of the Kingdom of East Anglia, one of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the Middle Ages, and the name means "East Angles." It is a vast area stretching from the Wash in the north to the mouth of the Thames in the south, bordering the North Sea in the east and the lowlands of Fenland in the west, and is centered on the present counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, as well as parts of Cambridgeshire and Essex. The terrain is gently undulating, and almost the entire area is covered with glacial deposits and alluvial soils.

イギリス，イングランド東部の歴史的地方名。もとは中世のアングロ･サクソン七王国の一つ，イースト･アングリア王国の支配領域を指し，地名は〈東アングル族〉を意味する。北はウォッシュ湾から南はテムズ河口にまで及び，東は北海，西はフェンランドの低地と接する広大な地域で，現在のノーフォーク州，サフォーク州を中心に，ケンブリッジシャー，エセックス両州の一部をも含む。地形はなだらかな波状地を呈し，ほぼ全域が氷河堆積物や沖積土におおわれる。
