Egypt's first national bank. It was founded in 1920 by Talaat Harb with the aim of promoting national industry, raising 80,000 Egyptian pounds from Egyptian investors. The bank's capital and deposits continued to grow, thanks to investments from the indigenous bourgeoisie and landlords that grew during World War I, and the Egyptian government's policy of encouraging domestic industry after it emerged from British military occupation in 1922. While providing loans to farmers, the bank also began to establish a series of directly managed commercial and industrial enterprises (the Misr Group) in 1922. The Misr Spinning and Weaving Company, established in 1927, was a large-scale modern factory, marking the beginning of Egyptian national industry.
