A sect belonging to spiritual Christianity. It appeared near Kharkov, Russia around 1740. Its name means "fighter for souls." Its founders, S. Kolesnikov and L. Pobirokhin, were of peasant origin. They opposed the tsarist government and the Orthodox Church that was in collusion with it. They rejected all external aspects of Christianity, such as clergy, monks, churches, sacraments, crosses, and icons, and used their own holy book, which they called the "Book of Life." They believe that God resides within the chosen righteous as "universal love," "wisdom," and "eternal good." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
