[Ancient times]
It is believed that there were settlers in the Paris Basin for about 2,000 years before the Roman conquest of Gaul, but the first people to settle on what is now the Ile de la Cité on the Seine were the Celtic Parisii. About half a century before Caesar's conquest of Gaul, they minted magnificent gold coins, which could be considered works of art, and traded them along the Seine.
