〘Noun〙 Buddhist term. ① Ten types of mental thoughts. That is, a general term for nembutsu, nempo, nemso, nemkai, nemshi, nemten, nemkyu, nemnanpan, nemshinkyoku, and nemushi. ② To contemplate the appearance of Amida Buddha ten times in a row. Or to chant his name ten times. Ten chantments of the name. [Ojoyoshu (984-985) ] [Commentary on the Treatise on Rebirth - Vol. 1] ③ A count of ten types of thoughts, including loving-kindness, compassion, and the desire to protect the Dharma. It is said to be explained in the Maitreya Sutra. [Ojoyoshu (984-985)] ④ In the Jodo and Ji sects, monks bestow the name Namu Amida Butsu on believers to form a bond with them. → To grant ten repetitions. ※Noh play, Yugyōyanagi (around 1516): “Thus, the old priest recited ten prayers and appeared to leave his presence, but he disappeared when he appeared to be stopping at an old mound of rotting willow trees.”

〘名〙 仏語。① 一〇種の心念。すなわち、念仏・念法・念僧・念戒・念施・念天・念休息・念安般(ねんあんぱん)・念身非常・念死の総称。② 阿彌陀仏の相好を一〇遍つづけて観想すること。またはその御名を一〇遍唱えること。十念称名。〔往生要集(984‐985)〕 〔往生論註‐上〕③ 慈心・悲心・護法心など一〇種のおもいを数えたもの。「彌勒所問経」に説くとされている。〔往生要集(984‐985)〕④ 浄土宗・時宗で、僧が南無阿彌陀仏の名号を信者に授けて結縁(けちえん)させること。→十念を授く。※謡曲・遊行柳(1516頃)「かくて老人上人のおん十念を賜(たま)はり、おん前を立つと見えつるが、朽ち木の柳の古塚に、寄るかと見えて失せにけり」
