This temple is located in Gaya-myeon, Hampeon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Its name is Gayasan (Gozusan) Haeinsa Temple. It is said to have been built in 802 by the 39th king of Silla, Aiso-o, for two monks, Sunjo and Sunjeong, who had been cured of a long-standing illness. The king requested the Tripitaka Koreana from the Tang Dynasty and built a library at Haeinsa Temple to house it. After that, during the reign of King Seongjong of Goryeo, the Tripitaka Koreana was printed and engraved several times, and the re-carved woodblocks were stored at Haeinsa Temple, forming the so-called "Haeinsa Woodblock Goryeo Tripitaka." During the heyday of the Goryeo dynasty, the temple boasted a magnificent scale with seven halls and hundreds of halls and monks' quarters lined with shingle roofs, but many of the ancient buildings were burned down in the repeated wars during the Yi dynasty. However, Sutara-jang, which houses the national treasure wooden blocks of the Buddhist scriptures, and Beopbojeon Hall were built in 1488. It is one of the three major temples in Korea, along with Tongdosa Temple and Songgwangsa Temple. The temple was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1995 (World Cultural Heritage).
