This plateau ice sheet area spreads south of Showa Station in Antarctica, and inland reaches an elevation of 3,500m. Apart from the Yamato Mountains in the west, the area is covered in ice about 2,000m thick. Winds blow downslope from the inland areas towards the coast, and there are many days of ground snowstorms. The continental ice flows towards the Soya Coast and Shirase Glacier. Japanese teams have been conducting meteorological, snow and ice, and earth science surveys here since 1957, and Mizuho Base is located here.
