Ichiura Kengyo

Japanese: 市浦検校 - いちうらけんぎょう

A blind jiuta and sokyoku performer in the Edo period. There were three generations, but the birth and death years of each are unknown. The first was a disciple of Ishizuka Kengyo, who was a disciple of Yasumura Kengyo, and had the town name Takuichi. He became a kengyo in 1755. He established the tradition of the Shinseita school in Osaka. The second was a disciple of the first, and had the town name Unoichi. He became a kengyo in 1814. The third was succeeded by Nakagawa Kengyo III, a disciple of the second. His town name was Ronoichi. He became a kengyo in 1828. Either the first or the second was involved in the revision of the koto group song catalog included in Utakyoku Jishuko (1881 supplement). He is also said to be a pioneer of the altered hand style koto music, in which decorative altered hand is added to the sangen hand of jiuta. The song "Holland Banzai" is especially famous for its use of a new tune for the koto, inspired by music boxes (a rarity at the time), which he invented and added to the "Banzai" composed by Joshiga (→Banzai). He also added koto notes to the works of Minezaki Koto, Fujio Koto, Ishikawa Koto, and Kishino Jirozaburo. The Shin-Ikuta school was passed down from the second Ichiura Kengyo to the third Nakagawa Kengyo, the founder of the Osaka Nakasuji school (→Ikuta school).

江戸時代の盲人の地歌箏曲家。3世にわたるが，いずれも生没年未詳。1世は安村検校門下の石塚検校の弟子で，都名（いちな）はたく一。宝暦5（1755）年に検校となる。大坂の新生田流の伝承を確立している。2世は 1世の弟子で都名は卯の一。文化11（1814）年検校に登る。3世は 2世の弟子の 3世中川検校が継ぐ。都名は路之一。文政11（1828）年検校登官。1世あるいは 2世のうち，どちらかが『歌曲時習考』（1881増補）に付載された箏組歌目録の改訂に関係している。また地歌の三弦の手に対して，装飾風な替手をつける替手式箏曲の先駆者といわれている。城志賀作曲の『万歳』に，当時としては珍しいオルゴールにヒントを得た箏の新調子オルゴル調子（オランダ調子）を考案して替手をつけた『和蘭陀万歳』は特に有名（→万歳）。ほかに峰崎勾当，藤尾勾当，石川勾当，岸野次郎三郎などの曲にも箏の手をつけている。新生田流の流れは 2世市浦検校から大坂中筋の祖 3世中川検校へと伝えられた（→生田流）。
