…Hides are the skins of large animals (such as cattle and horses). According to American and Canadian standards, hides weigh 25 pounds (about 11 kg) or more. Skins are smaller than that and refer to the skins of young or small animals (such as calves, sheep, and pigs). Depending on the purpose of use, hides can be cut into the side (half cut at the back line), shoulder, butt, and belly when they are made into raw hides or leather (Figure). Raw hides that are not removed from animals are prone to spoilage, so they are preserved (dressing, curing) by immediately drying (dried hides), salting (salted hides), salting and then drying (salted dried hides), or treating with preservatives and then drying (medicated dried hides). …
