...When Emperor Mochihito raised his army, he wrote a letter of reply from Kofuku-ji Temple, criticizing Kiyomori as "a leper of the Taira clan and a samurai's trash", which angered Kiyomori and led him to flee from Nara. The Enkeihon and other sources say that he covered himself in lacquer, disguised himself as a leper, and escaped to the eastern provinces, where he joined Minamoto no Yukiie, but after joining Yoshinaka, he is said to have drafted documents and served as a strategist under the pseudonym Daifubo Kakumei. After Yoshinaka's defeat, he stayed at Hakoneyama Jingu-ji Temple, but when he came to Yoritomo's knowledge, he was confined to the mountain in 1195 (Kenkyu 6), according to the Azuma Kagami....
