absorptimetry

...A method for quantifying and identifying substances based on the intensity and wavelength of light absorption when transparent or translucent gases, liquids, or solids absorb light. A spectrophotometer is used for measurement, which consists of a light source, a spectroscope, and a light detection device, and the sample is inserted somewhere between the light source and the light detector. A stable incandescent lamp or gas discharge tube is used as the light source, and a prism, filter, and diffraction grating are also used in the spectroscope for spectral separation. A photocell or photomultiplier tube is also used as the light detector.
