Miguel (English spelling)Miguel, Maria Evaristo de Bragança

Miguel (English spelling)Miguel, Maria Evaristo de Bragança
Born: October 26, 1802, Kels
[Died] November 14, 1866. Claimant to the Portuguese throne of Brombach. Commonly known as Dom Miguel. Third son of King João VI (the Good King). Grew up in Brazil and returned to Portugal with his father (1821). His father approved the constitutional system that had been proclaimed while he was away, but Miguel opposed it and launched a coup d'état. He ran a reactionary military dictatorship from 1821 to 1824, but failed and went into exile in Vienna. In March 1826, his father died, and Miguel's eldest brother, Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, made his daughter Maria da Gloria the Queen of Portugal as Maria II, on the condition that she marry Miguel. However, when Miguel returned to Portugal in 1828, he gained the support of the reactionary forces and took the throne himself. Pedro returned to Portugal, fought against Miguel, occupied Oporto (32), and tried to suppress the civil war. As Spain, England, and France also recognized the legitimacy of Maria II, Miguel surrendered at Évora, renounced all claims to the Portuguese throne (May 1534), and fled to Rome, where he later died near Baden.
