One of the two types of sweat glands in humans. Also called the major sweat gland. While eccrine glands are distributed throughout the body and secrete what is known as sweat, apocrine glands are found only in certain areas such as the armpits, vulva, anal area, areola, and ear canal. In addition to secreting sweat, apocrine glands secrete in a unique way in which parts of the cells break off and the resulting fragments mix with sweat. For this reason, the secretions can have a distinctive odor. They develop slowly during infancy and rapidly during adolescence.

2種類ある人間の汗腺の一つ。大汗腺ともいう。エクリン腺が全身に分布して，いわゆる汗を分泌するのに対し，アポクリン腺はわきの下，外陰部，肛門周辺，乳輪，外耳道など特定の部分だけに存在し，汗の分泌を行うのとは別に，細胞の一部が切れ落ちてその破片が汗の中に混じるという特有の分泌の仕方をする。このため分泌物は特有の臭気をもつことがある。幼児期には発育が悪く，思春期になって急速に発達する。
