Tokujiro Oyama - Oyama Tokujiro

Poet and Japanese literature scholar. Born in Kanazawa City. Dropped out of Kanazawa Commercial High School due to illness. Became acquainted with Muro Saisei, and after moving to Tokyo, associated with Maeda Yugure and Wakayama Bokusui. He has written 12 tanka collections, from the tanka collection "Sasurai" (1913), which was influenced by naturalistic thought, to "Tofu no Sugagomo" (1946) and "Snow Guest" (1961), which are simple, free-flowing, and lively, yet still leave a deep, delicate melancholy. He presided over the tanka magazines "Shizen," "Kugo," and "Geirin." He also wrote many books on tanka theory, such as "Tanka Gojuko." He was awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize in 1951 (Showa 26) for his works including his research book "A Critical Biography of Priest Saigyo" (1934), his doctoral thesis "A Study of Otomo no Yakamochi" (Volume 1, 1948; complete edition, 1956), and his collection of tanka poems "Tofu no Sugagomo."

歌人、国文学者。金沢市生まれ。金沢商業を病のため中退。室生犀星(むろうさいせい)を知り、上京後は前田夕暮(ゆうぐれ)、若山牧水らと交わった。自然主義的な思潮を浴びた歌集『さすらひ』（1913）から、平明自在で、闊達(かったつ)なうちに、濃(こま)やかな哀愁を残す『とふのすがごも』（1946）、『雪客(さぎ)』（1961）に至る12冊の歌集がある。歌誌『自然』『箜篌(くご)』『芸林』を主宰。『短歌五十講』などの歌論書も多い。研究書『西行(さいぎょう)法師評伝』（1934）、学位論文となった『大伴家持(やかもち)の研究』（上巻1948、完本1956）、歌集『とふのすがごも』などの業績により1951年（昭和26）芸術院賞を受賞した。
