Otagawa River

Japanese:
Otagawa River

A river that flows through the western part of Hiroshima Prefecture and empties into Hiroshima Bay. It is a first-class river. It originates from Mount Kanmuri (1,339 meters) near the border between Yamaguchi and Shimane Prefectures, meanders eastward through the Chugoku Mountains, and merges with the Misasa River, which flows from the eastern part of the prefecture, in the northern part of Hiroshima City. It turns south near the confluence with the Misasa River, and in Hiroshima City it splits into six rivers: the Enko River, the Kyobashi River, the Motoyasu River, the Ota River (main river), the Tenma River, and the Ota River Floodway, forming a delta. It is 103 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 1,710 square kilometers. There are many gorges in the upper reaches of the Chugoku Mountains, and the tributary, the Shiwaki River, has the Sandankyo Gorge, a special national scenic spot. From the confluence with the Misasa River to Hiroshima Bay, about 20 kilometers south, it forms the Hiroshima Plain, an alluvial plain. "Tatara iron-making," once common in the Chugoku Mountains, was banned in the Ota River basin because it caused flooding. During the feudal era, boat transport was available to the present-day Akiota Town, and it was a major artery of transportation within the Hiroshima domain, but in the early Showa period, this was replaced by land transportation. The river basin is a forestry region, and hydroelectric power generation is also actively carried out.
