Myopathy

Japanese: ミオパチー（英語表記）myopathy

This refers to a group of diseases that cause muscle atrophy and weakness due to damage to the muscles themselves, rather than as a result of nerve damage. Types of muscle atrophy include hereditary diseases such as progressive muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy, glycogen storage disease, and familial periodic paralysis, muscle disorders caused by physical causes or drugs, inflammatory muscle diseases caused by autoimmune mechanisms and other factors, muscle disorders associated with endocrine disorders and metabolic diseases such as thyroid dysfunction, and muscle disorders associated with malignant tumors. Generally, muscle weakness and atrophy are predominant in the trunk and proximal limbs, but some types of diseases are predominant in the distal parts.

神経障害の結果としてではなく，筋肉自体の障害のために筋萎縮や筋力低下をきたす一群の疾患をいう。進行性筋ジストロフィー症，筋強直性ジストロフィー症，糖原病，家族性周期性四肢麻痺などの遺伝性疾患，物理的原因や薬剤などによる筋障害，自己免疫機序その他による炎症性筋疾患，甲状腺機能障害などの内分泌異常や代謝疾患に伴う筋障害，悪性腫瘍に伴う筋障害などの種類がある。一般に筋力低下や筋萎縮は体幹や四肢近位部に優位であるが，疾患の種類によっては遠位部に優位のものもある。
