Isogawara (Isakagawara) tar spot

Japanese: イソガワラ(磯瓦) - イソガワラ（英語表記）tar spot

The name of a genus of small brown algae in the family Isogawara, found on rocks in the intertidal zone. Many species (e.g., Isohammon) grow by clinging to rocks, creating circular spots, but some species, such as the basic species of this genus, Isogawara, have shells that overlap each other like piles of tiles, giving the appearance of a double-flowered flower. All species have a body made up of creeping tissue and ascending tissue, and the cells that make up the tissue have one nucleus and one plate-shaped brown chloroplast. In nature, gametophytes and sporophytes are found, and the life cycle is homotypic alternation of generations.

潮間帯の岩上にみられる小型の褐藻イソガワラ科の1属の名称。岩上に円形の斑点模様をつくり，へばりつくようにして生育する種類が多い(例えば，イソハンモン)が，この属の基本種イソガワラのように殻状部が瓦を重ねたように幾重にもなって，全体として八重咲きの花のような形のものもある。いずれの種類も体は匍匐（ほふく）する組織と直上する組織からなり，組織をつくる細胞は1個の核と1個の板状の褐色の葉緑体をもつ。天然では配偶体と胞子体とがみられ，生活史は同型世代交代である。
