1879‐1950 A historian of science born in Italy, he later lived in France and Argentina. He first studied chemistry at the University of Pisa and worked as a chemist at the University of Rome, where he became a lecturer in 1908. He gradually became interested in research into the history and philosophy of science, and was one of the pioneers of this field during its early years. When the international academic journal on the history of science, Isis, was founded by Gal Sarton in 1912, he became its Italian editor, and went on to publish several Italian-language journals, working hard to promote recognition of the history and philosophy of science as academic disciplines.
