Among the works of Luther, for which he wrote the lyrics and music himself, "Our God is a Fortress" (Japan Christian Hymn No. 267 "God is my Tower") is particularly famous for its powerful tone and heroic melody. Many of the 16th century chorales, including those by Luther, emphasized the sense of community among believers, and reached a peak with "Awake, I Hear the Voice Calling" and "Beautiful Morning Star" composed by Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608). In the 17th century, a style of singing personal feelings gradually became dominant, but there were also fine pieces such as "Arouse My Heart" (the original of Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"), with lyrics by J. Liszt and composed by Johann Schop (c. 1590-1667). ...

…　みずから作詞作曲を手がけたルターの作品の中では，力強い語調と雄々しい旋律をもつ《われらが神はかたき砦》(日本基督教団賛美歌267番《神はわがやぐら》)がとくに有名である。ルターの作をはじめとする16世紀のコラールは，信徒の共同体意識を強調したものが多く，ニコライPhilipp Nicolai(1556‐1608)作曲の《目覚めよと呼ぶ声聞こゆ》《たえにうるわし暁の星》で，一つの頂点をきわめる。17世紀に入るとしだいに個人的な心情を歌った作風が支配的となるが，J.リスト作詞，ショップJohann Schop(1590ころ‐1667)作曲の《奮い立てわが心》(バッハの《主よ，人の望みの喜びよ》の原曲)のような佳曲も見られる。…
