In 1794, he gave a lecture to the viceroy and archbishop that cast doubt on the apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe, leading to his exile for 10 years, and welcomed Mexican independence in the United States. He relentlessly supported independence from Spain, Paris, and England, and his writings during that time are key to understanding the history of the War of Independence.
