Born in Yamagata City, he graduated from the Tokyo Higher Commercial School (Hitotsubashi University) and became an instructor there. He studied in Germany from 1903 to 1912. During that time, he studied under Professor Karl Lamprecht at the University of Leipzig, where he established a method for comparative civilization history based on the extraction of national characteristics of each country, and presented a grand vision for European history from classical antiquity to the early modern period. After returning to Japan, he became president of Ryohan Bank in Yamagata, and at the same time, as chairman of the Local History Research Society, he trained many local history researchers. In 1935, he was appointed president of Tokyo University of Commerce, and the following year, he became professor emeritus at the same university. After retiring from the university, he devoted himself to the study of the Orient, especially ancient Chinese history, from a comparative perspective with the West. "Essays on the History of East and West Civilizations" (1950) is a collection of published papers. A huge amount of unpublished manuscripts are kept in the Hitotsubashi University Library. 没年:昭和22.8.14(1947) 生年:明治10.8.12(1877) 歴史家。山形市に生まれ,東京高等商業学校(一橋大)専攻部を卒業後,同校教官となり,明治36(1903)年から大正1(1912)年までドイツに留学。その間ライプチヒ大学においてカール・ランプレヒト教授に師事,各国国民性の摘出に基づく比較文明史の方法をうちたて,古典古代より近世に至る壮大なヨーロッパ史の構想を発表した。帰国後は山形に帰って両羽銀行頭取に就任,そのかたわら郷土研究会の会長として多くの郷土史研究者を育成。昭和10(1935)年東京商科大学長に迎えられ,翌11年同大学名誉教授となる。退官後はもっぱら西洋との比較の観点から東洋,特に中国古代史の研究に没頭した。『東西文明史論考』(1950)は既発表の論文集。膨大な量の未発表の遺稿は一橋大学付属図書館に蔵されている。 (増田四郎) 出典 朝日日本歴史人物事典:(株)朝日新聞出版朝日日本歴史人物事典について 情報 |
