A technology used in VPNs to realize the concept of tunneling, which involves wrapping the original packet in another packet. By using encapsulation, packets addressed to private addresses that can only be exchanged within a LAN can be transmitted over the Internet. Various protocols such as IPsec, PPTP, L2TP, and MPLS are used to perform encapsulation.
