Yoshi (reed grass) - Yoshi (English spelling) reed grass
A perennial grass (illustration) that grows in colonies in wetlands everywhere. The long underground rhizomes spread out vertically and horizontally, and the upright stems grow to 1-3m in height, cylindrical and with many nodes. The leaves are narrow, lanceolate, somewhat hard, grayish-green, pointed at the tip, and drooping at the top. From summer to autumn, a large panicle up to 40cm long is produced at the top of the stem, and the upper part of the panicle and many long branches point slightly downward. The spikelets grow densely on the branchlets, are pale brown, 10-17mm long, and contain 2-4 florets. The lowest floret is male, the others are female, and are covered with long white hairs.
