A deciduous tall tree of the Araliaceae family, also known as Sennoki or Yamagiri. It grows in mountainous areas throughout Japan. The trunk is upright and can reach a height of 25m. The bark is dark brown with rough vertical fissures. The branches are thick and have many thorns, and palmate leaves, shallowly lobed into 5 to 9 pieces, grow alternately at the ends of the branches. In early summer, several flower stalks appear at the ends of the branches, forming umbels that bear many small yellow-green flowers. The wood is used for wooden clogs, furniture, etc.
