It is one of the oldest gardens still standing in Suzhou , Jiangsu Province, China. There is a theory that it was the residence of Qian Yuanliao, King of Guangling, of the Wuyue Kingdom during the Five Dynasties, and another that it was the villa of General Sun Chengyou, who was the governor of the Sino-Wuyue Army during the Five Dynasties. Later, in 1045 during the Northern Song Dynasty, the poet Su Shunqin settled in Suzhou and renovated it, naming it Canglang Pavilion after a fish song called "The Water of Canglang" by Qu Yuan. It is registered as a World Heritage Site. Generally, gardens in Suzhou are surrounded by high outer walls, but Canglang Pavilion offers a beautiful view of the gardens across the canal of the outer moat.
