Asiatic buffalo

...Wild species are distributed in the tropical regions of Africa and South Asia, and there are three genera and six species: African buffalo (cross buffalo) Synceros caffer (illustration), red buffalo (S. nanus ), Asian water buffalo ( Bubalus bubalis ( = B. arnee ), Mindoran buffalo (B. mindorensis ), Anoa (Anoa depressicornis ) (illustration), and mountain anoa (A. quarlesi ). The Asian buffalo (English name Asiatic buffalo, water buffalo) (illustration) is different from the African buffalo in that the cross section of the horns is clearly triangular, the bases of the left and right are far apart, the ears are relatively small, there are no noticeable tufts of hair on the edges, and the hair on the back runs from the lower back to the front. Wild specimens were once widely distributed in Southeast Asia, but are now thought to remain only in small areas in Orissa, Nepal, Assam, southern Myanmar, Thailand, and northern Cambodia, and those found in the wild in Sri Lanka, Laos, and northern Borneo are suspected to be feral domesticated species.
