P'ung-jang (English spelling)

P'ung-jang (English spelling)
Son of King Uija of Baekje, Korea. Date of birth and death unknown. Also written as Pungjang, or simply Pung. After Baekje was destroyed in 660, the royal family, Kisitsu Bokshin, and the monk Dochin attempted to restore Baekje from Juryuseong (near the mouth of the Geum River) and welcomed Pungjang, who was a hostage in Japan at the time, to the position of king. Many of the remaining forces responded to this, besieging the Tang forces stationed in Sabiseong (Buyo) and other places, tormenting the Tang and Silla forces. However, due to internal conflicts, Bokshin killed Dochin, who was killed by Bokshin himself, weakening the power of the restoration forces. Pungjang asked for help from Goguryeo and Japan, but Juryuseong fell to a combined attack by the Tang and Silla forces in 663, and Pungjang fled, resulting in the failure of the Baekje restoration movement.
