A perennial herb of the Umbelliferae family that grows in grasslands in the mountains and fields (illustration). Its Japanese name was given to it because it is found in abundance on Mt. Ibuki in Shiga Prefecture. The stem is 40-90cm tall, has an angled ridge, and branches out in large numbers at the top. The leaves are finely pinnate and divided 2-3 times, and are highly variable. The flowers are small and white with five petals, and grow in large numbers in a compound umbel at the end of the branches in August-September. The fruit is oval and about 3mm long, and when ripe it splits into two and hangs from the end of the central axis, before being blown away by the wind and falling. The surface of the fruit is characterized by dense fine hairs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
