Rossi - Giovanni Vittorio Rossi

Date of birth and death unknown. Italian ballet teacher, choreographer, and opera director. Born in Milan. Studied at the La Scala Ballet School and joined La Scala. From 1901 onwards, he worked as a choreographer at music halls in London and other venues. In 1912 (Taisho 1), he was invited to Japan to teach at the Imperial Theater's opera department, where he performed Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld and other works. His students included Rikizo Taya, Baku Ishii, Masao Takada (1895-1929), Seiko Takada, Kintaro Shimizu (1889-1932), and Nobuko Hara (1893-1979). After the Western theatre section (later renamed the opera section) of the Imperial Theatre was disbanded (1916), they opened the "Royal Hall" in Akasaka and staged operas such as "La Traviata" but it was a failure. They disbanded in 1918 and went to America, but their whereabouts after that are unknown. They had a major impact on the world of Western dance and opera in Japan.

生没年不詳。イタリア人のバレエ教師、振付師、オペラ演出家。ミラノに生まれる。スカラ座付属バレエ学校に学び、スカラ座に入団。1901年以降ロンドンのミュージック・ホールなどで振付師として活躍。1912年（大正1）日本の帝国劇場の歌劇部教師として招かれて来日、オッフェンバックの『天国と地獄』などを上演した。生徒に田谷力三、石井漠(ばく)、高田雅夫(まさお)（1895―1929）、高田せい子、清水金太郎（1889―1932）、原信子(のぶこ)（1893―1979）らがいた。帝劇の洋劇部（歌劇部改称）解散（1916）後、赤坂に「ローヤル館」を開場して『椿姫(つばきひめ)』などのオペラを上演したが失敗、1918年に解散してアメリカへ渡ったが、その後の消息は不明。日本の洋舞界やオペラ界に大きな影響を与えた。
