Pierre Mendès‐France

French politician. He became a member of the Radical Socialist Party in 1932, and in 1938 was Minister of State in the second cabinet of Léon Blum. He was arrested by the Vichy government in 1940, but escaped and fled to London. After the liberation of Paris in 1944, he became Minister of National Economy in the Provisional Government, and also served on the United Nations Economic and Social Council, but resigned from the cabinet in 1945 after clashing with Prime Minister de Gaulle over postwar inflation measures. After the establishment of the Fourth Republic, he formed his own unique trend, particularly in criticizing the Indochina War, and in June 1954, he was elected Prime Minister with the overwhelming confidence of the parliament, and ended the Indochina War with the Geneva Agreement (signed on July 21).

フランスの政治家。1932年急進社会党の議員となり，38年第2次レオン･ブルム内閣の政務次官となった。40年ビシー政府に逮捕されたが脱走してロンドンに逃れた。44年パリ解放後，臨時政府の国民経済相となり，また国際連合経済社会理事会などでも活動するが，戦後のインフレーション対策を巡ってド･ゴール首相と対立し，45年閣僚を辞任。第四共和政成立後は，とくにインドシナ戦争を批判して独自の潮流を形成，54年6月議会の圧倒的多数の信任を得て首相となり，ジュネーブ協定(7月21日調印)によりインドシナ戦争を終結させた。
