Oriental fruit moth (Nashihimeshinshoku) - Oriental fruit moth (Nashihimeshinshoku)
An insect of the Lepidoptera, Tortricidae family (illustration). Wing span is 1-1.5 cm. The forewings are black with scattered blue scales and numerous dark black lines, and the center of the base of the wing is slightly whitish. Distributed in temperate zones throughout the world, it is believed to have invaded Japan at the end of the Meiji period and has since spread to almost all of the country. The larvae are a major pest of Rosaceae fruit trees, such as apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, and loquats. In cold regions, they emerge two to three times a year, and in warm regions, they emerge four to five times a year. The larvae build cocoons between the bark of trees and overwinter there, emerging as adults the following spring.
