Mancheng Han Tombs - Manjō Kanbo

In 1968, a soldier from the People's Army discovered an ancient tomb from the Han dynasty near the peak of Lingshan in the western part of Mancheng County, Hebei Province, China. Tomb No. 1 lies buried with Emperor Wu's brother, King of Zhongshan Liu Sheng, and Tomb No. 2 lies with his wife, Dou Wan. Tomb No. 1 has a double wall at the entrance, between which molten iron was poured and solidified. At the entrance to the tomb chamber, there are ear chambers on either side, and a middle chamber and a back chamber. The coffin was placed 51.7 meters from the entrance. It has the atmosphere of a grand palace. There are many grave goods, but the gold-laced jade garment is a masterpiece. It is the funeral clothing of an emperor or aristocrat, covering the body from head to foot with small jade tags bound together. The jade is nephrite, a type of soft jade, and was probably brought from Xinjiang. Inside the tomb, many everyday items were buried just as they were in modern life. The bronzeware, "Chu Daguan Zhong" is a wine jar, which was confiscated from Liu Bo during the Wu-Chu Seven Kingdoms Rebellion (154 BC) and is thought to have been given to Sheng. The "Changxin Palace Lantern" has an inscription that reads "Yangxin family," and it is likely that after the death of Yangxin Marquis Liu Xi, the possession of the lantern changed hands and it became Sheng's.
